Tony Fulton, who drives for MK Trucking and runs the popular ‘Tones Truckin Stories’ Facebook page, has made a video for all road users explaining how to pull up safely on a highway

Tony tells Owner//Driver the idea for the video stemmed from a few recent incidents involving cars and motorcycles pulled over in unsafe spots.

“There are situations I’ve gotten into recently where you just think, ‘that could have ended badly,'” he says.

“Coming down the Pacific Highway there was a cop who had a motorcycle pulled up on a bend, we went past about 70 or 80km/h, but if a car in front of us had slowed to 40km/h, we’d probably have ploughed through them.

“Pretty well any truck driver comes into situations like these and people are slamming on the anchors when they see flashing lights which is creating a hazard.”

One solution, Tony believes, is to better educate motorists on how and where to safely pull over.

“When I made the video I wanted to talk to the motorists and remind them that when you see the lights come on, pull up smart,” he says.

“You can actually keep driving for a bit to find a safe spot, but a lot of people just pull over wherever.

“They can be in the right lane, on a bend, yet there’s a safe spot just a little bit further down.”
