A young woman is dead and the NSW road toll is again reaching record levels after a collision between a car and a truck yesterday evening.

The incident occurred in northern NSW west of Dorrigo when the eastbound car collided head-on with a westbound stock truck about 5.45pm.

Police say the 21-year-old driver of the car died at the scene, while the 71-year-old truck driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.

The death brought the road toll to 39, already 14 more deaths than this time last year and six more than the three-year average of 26 fatalities.

The road was blocked while police investigated the incident and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
