By Brad Gardner | March 5, 2010South Australian trucking operators are being told to comply with chain of responsibility laws introduced in the state last month.
The Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) has sent a public notice to the trucking industry about new speed compliance laws that took effect on February 1.
The laws put the onus on all parties in the supply chain to ensure truck drivers of vehicles of more than 4.5 tonnes are not forced to speed to make deadlines.
"Transport employers, prime contractors and operators now have a legal obligation to have business practices in place that manage driver speed," the notice says.
"Even if drivers don't speed you may still be prosecuted if you haven't taken all reasonable steps in your business to implement practices that manage speed."
However operators unsure of the laws can contact the department for an information kit or download fact sheets.
