A woman has died in the northern Queensland region of Mackay after her car collided with a freight train today.

Police are currently at the scene of the crash, which occurred around 5.50am.

Police say initial investigations show the freight train was travelling south when it hit the car at a level crossing.

The 25-year-old female driver died at the scene.

No other injuries have been reported.
