The New England Highway at Muswellbrook in NSW was shutdown for most of yesterday after a man lost control of his ute and ploughed into a truck.

Police are currently preparing a report for the coroner on the incident, which happened about 12.10pm when the soutbound ute spun across the roadway into the oncoming B-double tipper travelling north.

The highway was closed for about seven hours and the collision caused the truck to break through a railing to fall down a steep embankment to a valley below.

The 38-year-old driver of the ute died at the scene, while the 63-year-old truck driver was taken to hospital suffering shock.
