Brisbane Truck Show will feature Volvo’s dual clutch transmission

Volvo’s new transmission technology will be showcased at the Brisbane Truck Show.

Truck manufacturer Volvo will display what it describes as “exciting breakthrough technology” at next month’s Brisbane Truck Show.

Showcased as part of the Volvo Group exhibition will be the ‘I-Shift Dual Clutch’, which Volvo says is the world’s first dual-clutch transmission for heavy duty vehicles.

The company says the I-Shift Dual Clutch can basically be described as two transmissions combined in parallel, each with a separate clutch.

“Put simply, you could say that one gearbox controls the even gears, while the other manages the odd ones,” Volvo Trucks Australia vice president Mitch Peden says.

“When a gear is active in one gearbox, the next gear is prepared in the other gearbox so that no speed is lost during the gear change.”

Volvo says driver comfort is also enhanced, with a quieter environment in the cab and a smoother drive to reduce fatigue.

No date has been given for the introduction of the future technology into new trucks in Australia.

The Brisbane Truck Show will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre from from May 14 to 17.
