BTS 19: Mobileye refocuses drivers’ attention

What if we could refocus a driver's attention at the critical moment before a collision occurs?

Some 80 per cent of collisions and 65 per cent of near-collisions involve some form of driver distraction in the last three seconds before the accident, according to a report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI).

Just a moment of inattention can make all the difference. But, what if we could grab drivers’ attention at these critical times, buying back that moment before a collision occurs? That’s what Mobileye’s collision-avoidance system does.

The retrofit solution helps refocus drivers’ attention in real-time – when they are too close to the vehicle in front of them, are drifting into another lane, or when potential dangers move into their path.

Over the past 20 years, experience has shown advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), including forward collision warning, lane departure warning and pedestrian collision warning, work. Studies show 30 per cent of collisions could be avoided by wider adoption of ADAS.

Another benefit of Mobileye is aggregated data can be exported to third-party management systems, providing greater insights into driver behaviour.
