Some 80 per cent of collisions and 65 per cent of near-collisions involve some form of driver distraction in the last three seconds before the accident, according to a report published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in conjunction with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI).
