The federal and Western Australian governments have announced that Georgiou Group has been awarded the contract to design and deliver the duplication of the Mandurah Estuary Bridge.
The federal government says that the project will deliver significant improvements to congestion and safety in the Mandurah and Dawesville communities with a second, two-lane bridge constructed on the south side of the current bridge.
It will also include construction of a new four-metre-wide shared path to improve connectivity and access to recreational activities for the local community.
“The federal government is committed to improving our road infrastructure and connecting and improving the liveability for communities,” federal transport and infrastructure minister Catherine King says.
“The Mandurah Estuary Bridge will help ease ongoing congestion as well as deliver a safer, wider footpath, improving pedestrian safety.”
More than 33,000 vehicles currently use the existing Mandurah Estuary Bridge every day, with congestion an ongoing issue.
“The Mandurah Estuary Bridge was built more than 40 years ago, but it was not designed to cater for the high volumes of traffic we see along it today,” WA transport minister Rita Saffioti says.
“The bridge is used by thousands of people every single day, but it has become a bottleneck for commuters travelling within the Mandurah and Dawesville communities.
“Duplicating the bridge will significantly ease the congestion currently experienced on approach to the bridge and cut the travel times for the thousands of commuters every single day.”
Construction is expected to start in early 2024, with site investigations getting underway before the end of the year.
The federal government says that Georgiou Group has considerable experience in constructing bridges in WA, including the design and construction of the award-winning Mandurah Traffic Bridge, which was completed in 2018.
It is also part of the alliance that is currently delivering the new Fitzroy River Bridge.
