Newcastle and Hunter gearing up for huge truck show

The Newcastle Hunter Transport Awareness Group is back at Maitland Showground on October 29 for what looks to be a huge event.

The Newcastle and Hunter Valley transport industry will come together to celebrate the diversity and achievements of the industry on Sunday, October 29, thanks to the Newcastle Hunter Transport Awareness Group.

Now in its 23rd year, the Newcastle Hunter Transport Awareness Day and Truck Show will again be held at the Maitland Showground. Gates open at 10am where patrons can check out a huge line-up of truck displays, plus live entertainment, transport and safety related government authorities, and children’s entertainment.

As with previous years, the day will kick off with a 150 strong convoy of trucks and other transport vehicles leading from the Sandgate markets site up to Maitland Showground from 8am.

In a major coup for the event, the Newcastle Hunter Transport Awareness Group will also bring Supercars transporter to the event for the adults, while Mack The Transporter from Disney-Pixar’s movie Cars will also make an appearance.

Secretary of the Newcastle Hunter Transport Awareness Group, Leonnie Carter said the 2017 show is shaping up to be the largest day we have ever seen.

“Under the direction of a new and highly passionate committee of industry professionals, we are taking the show back to its original form and making it a Transport Awareness Day full of educational material and overall a fun day for the whole family that’s more than just trucks.

“Obviously having Supercars involved is a major feat. They recently held an open day at the Newcastle foreshore and much of that display will be replicated at our transport awareness day in Maitland,” Leonie says.

In addition there will be displays and information from Australian Trucking Association, the NSW Roads and Maritime Services, the National Heavy Vehicle Regular as well as Rod Hannifey with the TruckRight Industry Vehicle.

Riding off the back of the huge success of the Disney-Pixar’s Cars franchise, the Newcastle Hunter Transport Awareness Group will bring Mack The Transporter which is a life-size replica of the very popular Mack character from the Cars movies. Children will have their chance to get up close and personal to the huge truck, have photos taken and meet the Transporters Australian driver. There will also be appearances throughout the day from NRL Newcastle Knights legends and Ronald McDonald.

All proceeds raised from the day will this year be donated to the Mark Hughes Foundation, Ronald McDonald House and Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. In previous years, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service has received in excess of $1.4 million dollars from the event.

“We want to open up our industry to everyone,” Leonie says. “It’s important to us as an industry to break down the barriers between the community and the transport industry so people understand what we contribute to the Hunter region both economically and socially, but more importantly, that the roads are there to safely share for us all.”
