Eyre Highway reopens after HazMat incident

The Eyre Highway was closed between Eucla and Yalata yesterday following a semi-trailer fire

The South Australian Country Fire Service has announced that the Eyre Highway is now back open between Eucla and Yalata following a HazMat incident yesterday.

On Sunday, the service revealed it was responding to a HazMat incident 88km east of the Western Australian border in South Australia’s Nullarbor.

“Six CFS volunteers, with one truck and one bulk-water carrier, are on the scene, supported by SA Police, WA Police and Western Australia fire,” the SA CFS said yesterday.

“The cause of the smoke is a semi-trailer fire carrying household insecticides, which will continue to produce smoke for at least 10 to 24 hours.”

Road closures included the Eyre Highway between Eucla to Yalata, with the smoke and toxic fumes impacting the surrounding area and visibility.

Now, the SA CFS says the Eyre Highway is back open today, however it may change at short notice.
