Followmont Transport has revealed the reasoning behind its temporary price surcharge for freight services in North Queensland.
Followmont managing director Mark Tobin has addressed the price changes as the operator is one of numerous fighting to deliver goods and services to Far North Queensland locals amid recent floods.
“We are aware of recent feedback circling through online channels in regard to North Queensland services. Please know that this temporary surcharge is a difficult but necessary measure,” Tobin says.
“It does not come close to covering the immense costs we are facing to continue operating in our communities, but it allows us to keep essential services running. Our team is working around the clock, many contributing voluntary hours to ensure people get back on their feet as soon as possible.
“Our drivers are covering extra kilometres to deliver critical supplies to affected areas, with some sleeping in their trucks, while depots push through overwhelming workloads.”
Tobin says the company “doesn’t take this decision lightly”. Having absorbed costs where possible, he says operating under these conditions isn’t sustainable without a “short-term adjustment”.
“Without it, we simply would not be able to reach these locations, letting down both our people and the communities we serve,” he says.

“We are not alone in making these tough choices, this crisis has impacted the entire transport industry. Yet, we remain committed to doing everything we can to maintain a safe and viable solution.
“Followmont plays a crucial role in delivering medical supplies and food to North Queensland. It is in everyone’s best interest that we continue these services so that life-saving medication reaches those who need it, and communities can access essential goods.”
Tobin says the company’s hearts go out to families without power, water or supplies, vowing to continue ensuring help reaches those who need it most.
“I would like to reinforce that this surcharge is only temporary, and normal trade will resume once possible,” Tobin says.
“From a Queensland family business that truly cares, our thoughts are with everyone affected in these challenging times. Please stay safe and take care.”
