Hero sparky saves truckie from fire

A Melbourne electrician will be nominated for a bravery award after pulling a driver from a truck wreck on the Westgate Freeway around 2am Saturday, moments before the truck burst into flames.

On his way home along the Freeway, 23-year-old Brandon Phan heard the “massive bang” of the truck crashing.

Mr Phan, alongside two other witnesses, cut through a seatbelt, forced open a jammed door and got the 44-year-old driver away from the truck.

“He wasn’t getting out of the truck and I thought there would be a massive fire because I saw the fuel coming out,” Mr Phan told media.

Senior Sergeant John Mason said the driver was lucky to be alive, and confirmed Mr Phan will be nominated for a bravery award.

“The driver is extremely lucky to be alive, certainly the outcomes could have been completely different from him if it wasn’t for the passer-by,” Senior Sergeant Mason said.

“Certainly (Mr Phan will) be nominated for a bravery award. He probably saved the truck driver’s life.”

The driver of the truck was taken to the Alfred Hospital and is in a stable condition.

Following the truck crash, there was a five car pileup and one woman was hospitalised.
