Hino reveals it faked emissions data for some Japanese models

Hino in Japan uncovered falsified emissions and fuel economy data said to affect at least 115,526 trucks sold since 2016

Japanese news outlets have reported that Hino falsified emissions data for three engines manufactured by the truck maker affecting more than 100,000 vehicles sold since 2016

The Toyota-owned truck maker fronted a press conference in Japan on Friday where Hino president Satoshi Ogiso and chairman Yoshio Shimo apologised for the misleading data which the company reported to relevant government agencies in Japan.

Hino said in a press release that engine models A05C (HC-SCR), A09C and E13 and their corresponding vehicles in Japan which include medium, heavy duty trucks and buses are affected.

The data was found after a certification problem for the North American market led to an internal investigation by Hino, leading to the discovered of inaccuracies in emissions data for the three engines used in trucks and buses across the brand as well as by Isuzu and Toyota for bus models.

The falsified data is said to affect at least 115,526 trucks sold since 2016, with the company saying in a press release that;

“For other engine models, at this point of time, Hino has not identified any potential emissions exceedance beyond the regulatory standard, or potential issues in relation to the reported value for fuel economy.”

Hino has suspended sales of models in Japan suspected of not meeting the country’s emissions standards.
