SCT Logistics will add a second cross-country rail service from Parkes to Perth to its schedule, as the provider reports increased rail freight demand.
The Melbourne-based company has also announced it will relocate its road line haul fleet to Parkes, which has become a hub for interstate transport operations.
The new rail service between Parkes and Perth will commence on March 3, departing every Tuesday evening for arrival into its Perth terminal in the early hours of Friday morning.
The company says the new service will support its existing Saturday train from Parkes, giving customers a total of six rail services each week into Perth.
“Over the past year we have seen our trains grow from 4900 tonnes to capacity at 6000 tonnes every week, with overflow freight having to be directed via our Melbourne terminal,” the company says in a statement.
The relocation of the line hail operation makes Parkes the new hub for interstate transport operations, it says.
Four new positions have been advertised to manage the fleet, with more positions set to open.
“We are very pleased that in the current economic climate SCT Logistics’ continued growth in Parkes is resulting in increased employment opportunities for the region,” the company says.
“Parkes’ proximity to Brisbane (12 hours), Sydney (5 hours), Melbourne (9 hours) and Adelaide (12 hours) will provide us with an unrivaled central hub facility in which to handle interstate and intrastate road freight solutions for our customers.
“The relocation of our line haul operations will allow for better utilisation of fleet and drivers, while maintaining adherence to all relevant legislative requirements.”
Future plans for the Parkes site include expanded warehouse facilities and cross-dock operations for temperature-controlled freight.
