$8.5m for flood-proofing Qld truck routes

Government injection of $8.5 million to flood-proof 310km of road in Queensland's south-west

About $8.5 million will be spent upgrading 310km of road in Queensland’s south-west, the Federal and State governments have announced.

The cash injection will be used to reseal stretches of road – including the Fitzroy Development Road, the Warrego and Carnarvon highways and the Roma Southern Road – which are constantly under attack from severe weather.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says the maintenance of road networks in the area is vital to the transport industry and the state.

“Queensland’s south-west is important to the State’s economy and this funding will not only improve road safety, but also freight efficiency on these vital transportation routes,” Albanese says.

The funding comes as part of the Federal Government’s annual contribution to Queensland for network maintenance which totals $67.76 million for 2008 and 2009.
