Glen Cameron Group wins new five-year metro contract for Woolworths supermarkets worth $40 million
Melbourne-based carrier the Glen Cameron Group has won a five-year metro contract for Woolworths supermarkets worth $40 million.
News the group had won the South Australian tender came mid-last month, with General Manager Bruce Forsyth saying a direction to try and level the competition with larger contracts “is paying off, and it is working”.
“We are doing some metro and some near regional out of South Australia,” Forsyth says.
From May 18 the operator will begin delivering to 53 supermarkets and 64 free-standing liquor outlets in the region, managing “about 850 store visits each week”.
Managing Director Glen Cameron says the Woolworths contract win is “testament to our team, our fleet and our service offering”.
“Woolworths has a requirement for a modern, green and clean fleet. Driver safety and our ability to meet demanding delivery schedules were crucial to our contract win,” he says.
Woolworths’ well-known ‘green cause’ saw Cameron’s invest in 18 new Mercedes-Benz Actros trucks — all with cleaner Euro 5-accredited engines.
The new contract means employment opportunities for drivers and support staff will rise at the ever-expanding freight company, which specialises in courier, warehousing, demand hire, interstate and contract fleet.
Forsyth says finding good staff hasn’t been difficult, although he did say “there isn’t a great range of younger professionals coming through”.
“We’ve already stated hiring site mangers and drivers and people like that … we are being very selective because we are very keen to do a great job.”
