Bruce Hwy upgrade announced

Work will soon begin on $613 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway

Work will soon begin on a $613 million upgrade to the Bruce Highway to boost safety and reduce congestion.

The Rudd Government has announced the Cooroy to Curra project to deliver a four-lane carriageway will begin this year and be completed in 2012.

With crash rates 40 percent higher than other highways on the national road network, the federal and Queensland governments are hoping the investment will reduce fatalities as traffic volumes grow.

Since July 2002, 13 people have died on the Cooroy to Curra section.

The Federal Government will commit $488 million to the upgrade, with $125 million coming from Queensland.
