‘Dangerous’ Warrego Highway needs fixing

Queensland Opposition calls for Bligh Government to immediately invest funds into Warrego Highway

The Queensland Opposition is calling for the Bligh Government to immediately invest funds into the Warrego Highway, claiming it needs vital upgrades.

Opposition spokeswoman on roads Fiona Simpson says the stretch of road, which is the major route for truck drivers travelling from Brisbane to Darwin, is “substandard” and a “risk” to lives.

“I’m calling on the Bligh Government to bring forward urgent repairs which this highway desperately needs and to advocate to the Federal Government for the funds it needs for a proper upgrade,” Simpson says

She says the State Government has significant input into where federal funds are allocated and says the priority must now be given to the stretch of road.

“This highway has been labelled one of the worst links in Australia yet the Bligh Labor Government has lost focus on these critical pieces of infrastructure which are so vital for the economic development of the region as well as people’s safety,” she says.

“This is not good enough for the community and it is not good enough for the truck drivers who have to take long and costly detours around the worst sections of it.”

Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace announced an $8.1 million upgrade of the highway between Tivoli and Blacksoil earlier in the year.
