Minister, mayors meet on weather-hit Qld roads


Queensland Main Roads Minister to meet with mayors to discuss the dire state of weather-hit western roads

Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace will meet with mayors from the State’s west today to discuss the dire state of the regions roads.

The meeting which has been organised by Member for Mount Isa Betty Kiernan and will focus particularly on the state of the Landsborough Highway and the Winton-Hughenden Road, which have been badly affected by severe weather.

Wallace says he made a commitment taking on the Main Roads portfolio to do more for transport routes in regional Queensland.

"As a Minister from a regional area, I understand the important role our road network plays in keeping Queenslanders connected," Wallace says.

Kiernan has welcomed the Minister's visit and says it is vital Western Queensland’s road system is given vital support.

"Our roads are the lifeblood of our region," Kiernan says.

"They are essential to the way we do business [and] to the way we have essential goods delivered to us.

"Severe weather events in recent seasons have seriously knocked our roads around and we need to make sure we get our fair share of government funding."

Wallace will also drive the Winton-Hughenden Road to gather some perspective of its current state.
