Airfreight given a home at the VFLC

Victoria's air freight industry given official home at the Victorian Freight and Logistics Council

September 29, 2009

Victoria’s air freight industry has been given an official home at the Victorian Freight and Logistics Council (VFLC) following the establishment of a new “special focus” body, The Victorian Airfreight Working Group (VAWG).

The VAWG will operate alongside the council’s existing intermodal, infrastructure and transport and logistics groups.

According to VFLC Chairman John Begley the inclusion of airfreight in the council is essential if Melbourne is to be considered Australia’s air freight leader and transport hub.

“We think the merger of the councils and the setting up of VAWG is a great opportunity for holistic thinking about the part air freight plays in the total Victorian supply chain picture,” Begley says.

“To some extent air freight has been off to one side; there’s not been a map and model for how it can and should be integrated with other modes to reinforce Melbourne’s standing as Australia’s freight capital.

Begley says the inclusion of air freight at the council also creates a “Gateway of Choice” in the city given the location of curfew-free operating hours, substantial land banks for expansion and “excellent” road networks.
