Transport leads business in return to labour demand

THE RECOVERY: More job ads online for transport positions than any other industry sector

October 12, 2009

More job advertisements were posted online for transport positions than any other industry sector, leading business in the return to demand for workers.

The number of ads for transport positions spiked another 10.6 percent higher in September, according to the Olivier Job Index, ahead of sectors like administration (9.5 percent), human resources (8.1 percent) and financial services (7.1 percent).

Specialist recruitment website Transjobs.com.au is also reporting a significant upturn in interest from employers, with more than 1,000 jobs posted from transport, logistics and supply chain companies.

But the number of ads are still down more than 50 percent year-on-year.

The overall Olivier Job Index increased 3.5 percent during the month, which the firm says supports a trend of continued recovery in the employment market.

“However,” it reports, “one must not get carried away as we’re still highly dependent upon an improving global economic outlook.

“One also has to bear in mind that we are coming back off a low base. The index is still 46.04 percent off from 12 months ago so there is still a long way to go.

Still, the firm reports surprise in the “speed with which clients are committing to new staff”.

“It certainly reflects ‘pent up demand’,” the Olivier report says.

“Our experience is that these are newly-created roles, largely full time and often senior level appointments.

“There is also pent up demand for new opportunities from job seekers and we expect stronger candidate flows over the next couple of months and a significant upturn from passive job seekers in the new year as they flock back to the market.”
