Truckie 'left for dead' in pre-dawn accident

TWU outraged truck driver was left for dead when nobody attended highway crash north of Brisbane

October 13, 2009

The union has expressed outrage that a truck driver was left to die on the side of the Bruce Highway north of Brisbane yesterday when nobody attended the crash for hours.

Police believe it took about three hours to reach the accident scene on the Tiborgargan Creek Bridge near the Glasshouse Mountains yesterday morning.

The Latter's Transport B-double laden with cement ran off the road and rolled onto the bridge pylons at about 1:30am yesterday morning, but the crash was not reported until 5:40am.

Transport Workers Union (TWU) Queensland Secretary Hughie Williams says he's "disgusted" people could drive past the crash and not call for help.

But police say the wreckage was probably not visible from the highway in the dark.

"This truck driver’s life could have been saved if someone helped him out," Williams says.

"The TWU urges every Queensland motorists to report a crash scene to police straight away.

"It could be the difference between someone living or dying."

Police have called for anyone who may have seen the crash or its aftermath to come forward.

The identity of the driver is still not known.
