Dates announced for IR briefings

Briefing sessions on new IR laws will be held in NSW to help operators and drivers understand their obligations

November 16, 2009

A series of free briefings on new industrial relations changes will be held in northern NSW later this month and early December.

An industrial relations lawyer with an understanding of the heavy vehicle industry will hold information sessions in Tamworth, Coffs Harbour, Lismore and Dubbo over the next three weeks.

The Australian Road Transport Industrial Organisation (ARTIO) says the briefings are designed to help those in the trucking, bus and coach sectors understand their obligations under the Fair Work Act, which was introduced this year.

“Significant amendments to federal workplace laws introduced by the Rudd Government earlier this year will affect all employers in the truck, bus and coach industries,” ARTIO’s secretary and treasurer, Hugh McMaster, says.

“These briefings will give employers a sound understanding of their legal obligations and how they apply to the particular circumstances that affect their road transport operations.”

McMaster says attendees will have access to professional advice required by transport employers to assist them in complying with the new laws.

The first briefing at Tamworth will be held on November 24 from 10am to noon at the Best Western on Goonoo Goonoo Road.

The Coffs Harbour briefing will be held on November 25 from 10am to noon at Aanuka Beach Resort, 11 Firman Avenue.

Lismore Workers Club will host the next briefing on November 26 from 10am to noon on Keen Street.

The final briefing will be at the Cattlemen’s Country Inn on Wylandra Street in Dubbo on December 2. The session will be held from 2pm to 4pm.

Those interested in attending can contact McMaster on 0412 880 861 for more information.
