November 25, 2009

NSW police have launched an investigation into a fatal crash involving a car and truck on the Great Western Highway.

The incident happened at Lawson yesterday morning when the 18-year-old provisional driver and the truck collided head-on.

Police, paramedics and the fire brigade worked to free the trapped driver from the wreckage, as a helicopter was brought in.

“Attempts were made to resuscitate the 18-year-old male provisional P2 driver, however, he died at the scene,” a police statement says.

The truck driver was not injured but was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests, while police cordoned off the road and set up a crime scene.

“Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner,” a police statement says.

Police closed one lane of the highway and had to divert eastbound traffic after the incident.

Anyone who witnessed the crash has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The NSW road toll is currently 422, 92 more deaths than this time last year.
