Truck rollover kills 500 sheep

Hundreds of sheep killed and one lane of the Pacific Highway closed after B-double rolls over in regional Victoria

November 20, 2009

Hundreds of sheep were killed this morning when a B-double rolled over on the Princes Highway in regional Victoria.

Police say the incident happened in Stoneyford near Colac about 2am after the driver of the B-double lost control and left the road, killing 500 sheep.

The driver was not injured in the incident, which has caused traffic delays.

Police have had to close one lane on the highway between Hawkes Nest Road and the Pirron Yallock Hotel while the vehicle is removed and stray sheep are caught.

A spokeswoman says the lane will be shut for at least three more hours. She says the first attempt to remove the truck was unsuccessful and a crane will now be brought in.

Police do not yet know what forced the truck to roll over.

“The cause has yet to be determined,” the spokeswoman says.
