WesFarmers says it is important a change from the use of traditional fuels like petrol and diesel to cleaner energy such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) takes place in the transport industry.

In its sustainability report for 2009 the company says it will continue to push for more of its products to be transported by more environmentally friendly heavy vehicles.

"We recognise that the use of fuels other than petrol and diesel is becoming increasingly important in the context of both achieving lower overall pollution levels and the climate change debate," WesFarmers says.

"We continue our efforts, through our energy division, to expand the market for LNG as a substitute for diesel in the heavy duty vehicle and remote power generation sectors."

WesFarmers already owns a major distributor and marketer of LPG, Kleenheat Gas, which provides LPG and gas appliance to a large number of domestic, commercial, Autogas and industrial customers.

The company operates throughout Australia through country wide depots, company-owned branches, dealers, agents and franchisees.
