Victoria calls for federal funds for road projects

Brumby Government seeks federal funds for WestLink project and the plan to remove trucks from local roads

December 3, 2009

The WestLink and the Truck Action Plan have been outlined as top priorities in the Victorian Governments 2009 submission to Infrastructure Australia.

Minister for Roads and Ports Tim Pallas says the inclusion of the two schemes shows the need to fund vital infrastructure projects in Victoria.

“Our submission to Infrastructure Australia highlights the importance of Victoria’s commercial ports, especially the Port of Melbourne, to the national economy and sets out a clear strategy to increase capacity and drive efficiencies at our ports,” Pallas says.

“WestLink is a road tunnel from the port precinct to Geelong Road/Sunshine Rd, with a longer term connection to the Western Ring Road. The Truck Action Plan will create an alternative route for freight to access the Port of Melbourne.”

Pallas says WestLink will reduce Melbourne’s over reliance on the West Gate Bridge, while the Truck Action Plan will remove heavy vehicles from local roads.
