Bruce Hwy upgrade full steam ahead

Construction work to begin on $600m Bruce Highway project after the announcement of Fulton Hogan as the new tender

January 12, 2010

Work on a southern section of Queensland’s Bruce Highway will begin within weeks after the Rudd Government announced the tender for the project.

Fulton Hogan was selected to begin the second round of construction on the important freight route from Cooroy to Curra north of the Sunshine Coast.

Major works on the $613 million project have been underway since September last year, and federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese says excellent progress is being made.

“Since we first announced funding, a little over seven months ago, two of the three major construction contracts have been awarded. Tenders for the third package of works are expected to be called in the middle of this year,” he says.

As well as slashing travel times, Albanese says the project will improve driving conditions and support about 1,650 direct and indirect jobs.

Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace says Fulton Hogan will be responsible for building a two kilometre southern deviation off the Bruce Highway near Federal.

The deviation will be between Sankeys Road and Middle Creek Road to allow new bridges to be constructed over Skyring Creek.

The works form part of a 12 kilometre alignment, which Wallace expects to be completed in 2012.

The upgrade of the Bruce Highway near Gympie is part of the Rudd Government’s $8.6 billion investment in Queensland’s road and rail infrastructure.
