Government announces construction of four new rest areas and upgrades to 10 existing stops in NSW

Truck drivers travelling through NSW will have soon have more places to rest after the Rudd Government approved funding for four new and upgrades to 10 existing stops.
Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese today announced details of the NSW projects that will receive funding under the second and final round of the $70 million Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program.
New and upgraded rest areas will be on some of the nation’s busiest routes, including the Hume, Mitchell, New England, Newell, Princes and Golden highways.
Albanese says the Government will invest $9.7 million and NSW will match the funding.
“Upon taking office, we recognised there was a lack of safe, modern rest stops along the nation’s highways,” Albanese says.
“The program we’ve put in place to begin rectifying this situation represents the biggest single federal investment in the roadside facilities used by truck drivers.”
He says the NSW Government’s decision to work with the Rudd Government will help drivers get the rest they need and make the roads safer for all motorists.
The announcement comes following the 58 projects approved under the first round of funding, including 6 new and 44 refurbished rest stops and parking bays.
