Avoid Pacific Highway, police urge

Fatal crash on NSW north coast shuts down Pacific Highway for indefinite time, with motorists told to avoid the area

March 12, 2010

Police are appealing for motorists and industry to delay travel on the Pacific Highway for an indefinite time on the NSW north cost after a fatal collision earlier today.

Shortly before 8am police and emergency crews were called to the highway 15km south of New Italy after two vehicles crashed head-on.

The road between Maclean and Woodburn has been shutdown, but police are uncertain for how long as work begins to clear the wreckage.

“As a result of the crash, two people died at the scene. Two others have been taken to hospital with serious injuries,” a police statement says.

“The highway is expected to be closed for several hours. Local diversions are in place.”

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
