March 12, 2010

Police are appealing for motorists and industry to delay travel on the Pacific Highway for an indefinite time on the NSW north cost after a fatal collision earlier today.

Shortly before 8am police and emergency crews were called to the highway 15km south of New Italy after two vehicles crashed head-on.

The road between Maclean and Woodburn has been shutdown, but police are uncertain for how long as work begins to clear the wreckage.

"As a result of the crash, two people died at the scene. Two others have been taken to hospital with serious injuries," a police statement says.

"The highway is expected to be closed for several hours. Local diversions are in place."

Investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
