A truck driver is helping police investigate a fatal collision on March 2 involving an elderly man.

Witnesses have told police the 80-year-old from Bairnsdale tried to cross a street about 2.15pm yesterday.

He had made it to the centre median strip and was continuing north across eastbound lanes.

“Investigators believe that the man stepped out from in front of a parked 4WD and into the path of an east bound truck,” a police statement says.
The man died at the scene.

A report will be prepared for the coroner on the fatality, which brings Victoria’s road toll to 55, six more deaths than the same time last year.
