Work will begin today on a new $48 million Reid Highway and Alexander Drive interchange in Western Australia.

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien says the investment will fix dangerous black spots and improve road safety.

He says a rapid growth in traffic numbers has led to delays and a rise in crashes, with 365 incidents reported in the five years.

The interchange will be completed in 2011 and will include two separate bridges along the Reid Highway over Alexander Drive.

“The Reid Highway plays a key role in Perth’s transport network, providing a vital east-west link between many of our major north-south arteries,” O’Brien says.

The Barnett Government has allocated $1.2 billion next financial year for road funding, which includes upgrades to the Coalfields, Roe and Great Eastern highways.

“The State Government is specifically providing $220million over the next four years in targeted works through the Safer Roads and State Black Spot program to ensure the State’s road network receives appropriate upgrades,” O’Brien says.
