Wallace releases road plan for feedback

North Queensland community, business and industry leaders to have a say in new road plan for the Bruce Highway

June 4, 2010

Residents in the North Queensland region of Mackay will be given a say on the development of a new road plan for the Bruce Highway.

Queensland Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace today announced public information events to give community, industry and business leaders the opportunity to have a say on traffic flows and safety issues on the highway.

He says the feedback will help engineers and road planners develop a plan.

“The strategy will focus on potential upgrades to the Bruce Highway between the Hay Point Road turn-off in the south and Bald Hill Road in the north,” Wallace says

“We want to take a fresh look at road infrastructure in the region and what needs to be done to meet the future needs of motorists and other road users.”

Wallace says it is necessary to invest in regional centres such as Mackay to attract more people to live and work in North Queensland.

“We want to hear from the local community on a range of issues such as intersection upgrades, extra lanes and the needs of pedestrians and cyclists,” he says.

Public information days will be held between 2pm and 8pm on June 16 at the Mackay Entertainment and Convention Centre and on June 22 between 2pm and 8pm at the Windmill Hotel.

Stakeholders can also call the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 1800 993 234.
