A bridge has been closed in North Queensland following a fiery crane crash, forcing police to close down a road and enforce traffic diversions.

An industrial crane drove over the side of the Jack Philps Bridge over Terry Creek about 5:45am today off of Bown Developmental Road.

The incident happened east of Collinsville, which is between Townsville and Mackay.

"A fire has started in the vehicle causing extensive damage to the structure," a police statement says.

The bridge has been closed indefinitely.

"Bowen Developmental Road also known as Peter Dellamothe Road between Bowen and Collinsville is also closed. Diversions are in place and motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible," the police statement says.
