Police in NSW have appealed for help to solve the mystery of a truck facing the wrong way on a Sydney motorway with the driver slumped over the wheel.

The driver, in his 50s, was taken to hospital suffering a head injury after being discovered in his red and white Victorian-registered prime mover about 10:30pm last night on the M5 at Roselands south-west of Sydney.

Police had to force their way into the truck cabin to allow paramedics to asses the man.

“Inquiries into the circumstances leading up to the prime mover being found on the roadside are continuing,” a police statement says.

Anyone who saw the prime mover before 10:30pm has been asked to contact Campsie Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
