Victorian rail strategy expected to have an impact on traffic congestion in western Melbourne

Victoria’s Regional Rail Link strategy will have an impact on traffic congestion in the western Melbourne suburb of Sunshine, with the removal of two level crossings on Anderson Road.

The crossings, between Ballarat Road and Wright Street, are within a few hundred metres of each other and close to the warehouses and commercial premises that the suburb hosts.

With the state election only weeks away, the Government has issued a flurry of transport infrastructure initiatives, many road-related and some impacting on truck traffic.

Last week, at the Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry regional business conference, Premier John Brumby announced $2.5 million to kick-start the Ballarat Western Link Road between the Western and Midland highways.

On the same day, the Government noted that work had started on a new direct freeway link between Kings Road and the Calder Freeway at Taylors Lakes.

Before that, Roads Minister Tim Pallas announced the longer tunnel option as the preferred route for the WestLink projec, saying that it avoided residential areas and would take the greater amount of trucks off inner western suburban streets.

Earlier Pallas had said the $74.6 million Dingley Arterial through Keysborough, connecting Westall Road with the Dandenong Bypass, would start next month.
