Work will begin next month on the completion of a multi-million dollar upgrade to improve the Barton Highway and reduce traffic congestion in the ACT.

The Stanhope Government has awarded the $15.5 million contract for the final stage of the $85 million duplication of the Gungahlin Drive Extension (GDE).

As well as connecting the highway to Belconnen Way, the project will deliver new lanes for the Barton and reseal a section of GDE between Bandjalong Crescent in Aranda and the Glenloch Interchange.

"Once completed, the 9km, four-lane GDE will significantly ease north-south traffic congestion for up to 20,000 vehicles during peak periods," Chief Minister and Minister for Transport Jon Stanhope says.

"This crucial road infrastructure will meet the transport needs of the people of Gungahlin, and of the ACT as a whole by relieving congestion on other arterial roads.

"The duplication of the GDE will be completed by mid 2012, linking the Barton Highway to the Tuggeranong Parkway at the Glenloch Interchange."

The works include a new southbound bridge over the highway and two new southbound lanes from the Barton to Ginninderra Drive. Additional lanes and another overpass will be built on Belconnen Way.
