New England Highway closed after collision between a truck and utility kills two people

The New England Highway near the border of NSW and Queensland has been closed after a fatal collision between a truck and utility today.

The crash happened around 11:30am south of Stanthorpe, killing the driver and passenger of the utility about 1km south of the intersection with Whiskey Gully Road.

Police have closed the road while its forensic unit investigates what led to the accident.

The news comes amid a warning of severe weather for South-East Queensland.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of thunderstorms, hail and damaging winds for Brisbane, Logan, the Gold Coast, Ipswich and the Sunshine Coast.

“Winds of 90km/hr have been observed at Amberley and 80km/hr have been observed at Archerfield and Applethorpe,” the Bureau says.
