February 1, 2011

Police will today question a truck driver after his rig rolled in NSW last night killing hundreds of feral goats.

The crash happened about 7pm on Kidman Way south west of Griffith. The truck was carting about 1000 live goats when it rolled.

“A significant number of the goats were killed instantly or had to be humanely euthanized,” a police statement says.

“The remaining animals were rescued and placed in a nearby paddock.

“Griffith police are investigating the cause of the crash and will interview the driver later today.”

The truck driver was taken to hospital with minor injuries. No other people were injured.

Staff from the Department of Agriculture and Council Rangers were called in to assist police manage the goats, while emergency services and volunteers lent a hand.

The truck is being removed today between 7am and 10am, forcing police to close a section of Kidman Way.

“Motorists are asked to avoid the area of Kidman Way near the intersection of Plos and Warburn Street between these hours,” the police statement says.

Any witnesses to the crash have been asked to contact Griffith Police on 02 6969 4299.
