A truck driver will face court accused of deliberately dumping tonnes of rock and soil on the Sydney Harbour Bridge yesterday.

The 60-year-old Dee Why man was arrested at the scene after police were called to the incident just before 3:30pm.

Police will allege the man drove his tipper truck on the bridge and stopped in the northbound lanes before dumping up to eight tonnes of soil and rock.

“The material caused a major obstruction to traffic and lanes one, two and three of the Bradfield Highway were blocked while a bobcat and road sweeper were brought in to assist in the clean-up operation,” a police statement says.

The man has been granted bail and will appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on May 3.
