A police investigation is underway into a truck and car crash on the Newell Highway yesterday that killed two people.

The incident happened in the north-west of NSW near Moree when a B-double truck and car collided just before 5.45pm.

The two occupants of the car died and have yet to be formally identified, while the truck driver was taken to Moree Hospital with minor injuries. He will undergo mandatory blood and urine tests.

The Newell Highway was closed for several hours while police conducted their investigation into the cause of the collision.

“One of the diesel tankers the truck was towing ended up partially submerged in a nearby creek,” a police statement says.

“Police are continuing their inquiries to determine what caused the collision.”

A report will be prepared for the NSW Coroner. Anyone who witnessed the crash or the circumstances leading up to it can contact Moree Police Station via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
