Load limit slapped on bridge; truckies warned

VicRoads imposes load limit on bridge in inner Melbourne after a recent inspection found the need for maintenance works

VicRoads has imposed a load limit on the Victoria Street Bridge in inner Melbourne after a recent inspection found the need for maintenance works.

From today, all vehicles using the bridge must weigh no more than 30 tonnes, except trams which can use the bridge one at a time, and emergency vehicles.

VicRoads metropolitan north west regional director Nial Finegan says while the bridge is safe, VicRoads has imposed the temporary traffic restrictions to undertake maintenance works.

“Until the maintenance works and investigations are carried out, a load limit of 30 tonnes will apply until further notice,” Finegan says.

“During this time, truck drivers will need to be particularly mindful of the weight of their truck and its load. Given that higher mass vehicles have never been able to use Victoria Street, this 30 tonne limit is expected to have limited impact on road users.”

Finegan has warned truck drivers they will be hit with penalties if their loads exceed the set limit.

Trucks travelling along Victoria Street and Barkers Road can use Burnley Street, Bridge Road and Church Street.

Warning signs of detour routes for both inbound and outbound traffic will be clearly displayed in advance of the bridge and will guide vehicles through the detour.
