Buswell extends road train exemption to help cattle industry

Western Australia's transport minister extends the expiry date for special road train permits to help cattle industry

September 1, 2011

A special road train permit to help the cattle industry cart livestock from Western Australia’s north to southern destinations has been extended.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell yesterday announced an extension of the expiry date for the permit, which was due to end yesterday, to the end of November.

Known as the ‘exceptional circumstances policy’, the permit allows pastoralists to move their cattle on triple road trains to the south of Western Australia for agistment and processing.

“The concession was used to counter the negative impacts of the Federal Government’s suspension of live cattle exports to Indonesia earlier this year,” Buswell says.

“Although the suspension is now lifted, it created a build-up of cattle numbers in the north-west and these have to be moved to Muchea and other destinations.”

Buswell says the need to move cattle south will exist for at least another three months and that using triple road trains offers the industry the most cost effective and efficient way of doing so.

He says he will reassess the need for the permit at the end of the November.
