Victorian Transport Minister Terry Mulder has backed MP Lucinda McLeish’s call for the Northern Highway to be improved, saying more needs to be done to reduce the risk of crashes.

"As the member for Seymour pointed out, a 21-year-old Wallan man was killed at that particular location recently as a result of a car being in an accident with a truck," Mulder says.

"We know that we can do an awful lot in relation to improving the physical works in and around road networks but there is also a lot more we can do."

Mulder says the government has taken steps to improve road safety, including strengthening laws targeting hoon driving .

He says the government is also looking to slap a new road safety message on number plates, which Mulder says is the best location to have a safety message.

McLeish says the Broadford-Kilmore Road intersection needs improvements as her constituents believe it is dangerous.

"Given the growth in the Kilmore-Wallan area, there will be more people and cars on the roads, so it is with that in mind that I take this formal request of the minister to ensure this intersection gets the attention it deserves and the people in and around Kilmore and those passing through have safer roads," she says.
