B-double ride proves fatal for hitchhiker

Police investigate after hitchhiker dies while riding on the back of a B-double unbeknownst to the driver

Police are investigating the death of a hitchiker who fell off the back of a B-double yesterday in southern NSW.

He died last night near Wagga Wagga on the Sturt Highway when he fell onto the road. The truck driver, travelling west about 7km east of Collingullie, was unaware someone was clinging to the rear of his rig.

"Investigations into the incident are continuing, however, it is believed the man may have been a hitchhiker and climbed onto the back of the truck while it was stopped at traffic lights in the Wagga township," a statement from NSW Police says.

A truck driver travelling behind the B-double spotted the hitchhiker moments before he fell off and tried to notify the vehicle in front of what was going on.

"He attempted to get the truck driver’s attention by flashing his headlights and calling him on the UHF radio without success before the man fell," NSW Police says.

The truck driver was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests, and NSW Police says a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Anyone who might have witnessed the man climbing onto the truck has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
