A truck driver is dead and another has been taken to hospital after two rigs collided head-on in NSW, igniting a vehicle and closing a section of the Newell Highway.

NSW Police says the two trucks crashed just before 4am today about 20km south of the Dubbo.

“One of the trucks ignited after the crash. Police and emergency services attended the scene and the fire was extinguished,” a police statement says.

“One of the drivers died at the scene, the other has been taken to Dubbo Hospital in a stable condition.”

Diversions have been put in place.

“Northbound traffic on the Newell Highway is being diverted through Narromine. Traffic intending to travel south should follow the diversions through Narromine, or alternatively use the Mitchell Highway,” NSW Police says.

Meanwhile, the Hume Highway has been closed at the Menangle Bridge 60 minutes southwest of Sydney after a triple fatal crash involving a truck and car about 11;25am.

NSW Police says the three occupants of the car died.

The truck driver has been taken to hospital with minor injuries and will undergo mandatory blood and urine testing.

“The Hume Highway has been closed at the Menangle Bridge and northbound traffic is being diverted onto Picton Road,” a statement from police says.
