No IA request leaves projects, workers 'in limbo'

Former Victorian roads minister slams government for failing to submit a funding request to Infrastructure Australia

April 23, 2012

Former Victorian roads minister Tim Pallas has slammed the state government for failing to submit a funding request to Infrastructure Australia.

He says an Eastern Freeway link with Citylink and Western Ring Road would create jobs and reduce congestion.

The government’s failure to submit the request in time means the project could miss out on funding until the 2013 federal budget.

"The Baillieu Government’s tardiness means thousands of potential construction jobs are now in limbo until at least 2015," Pallas says.

"Studies and planning for the road link might not even get underway until 2013."

The scrapped $38 billion Victorian Transport Plan would have created more than 6000 jobs each year, he adds.

"By shelving Labor’s plan, [Premier] Mr [Ted] Baillieu has also delayed improvements to Victoria’s public transport system to reduce congestion.

"Victoria’s business community wants action now from the Baillieu Government – not in five to 10 years’ time.
