NSW Police is appealing for the truck driver who hit a pedestrian in Newcastle to come forward.

The driver hit a man who was walking in the breakdown lane on the Pacific Highway at Tomago, where three lanes merge into two, near the Hexham Bridge.

Police believe the driver might not have known he struck a man because he was wearing dark clothing.

The man was thrown onto the grass shoulder of the highway while the truck driver continued driving.

The injured man crawled back to the edge of the road and hailed a passing motorist for help.

He was treated at the scene and taken to John Hunter Hospital with a serious lower leg fracture.

Newcastle Crash Investigation Unit officers are investigating the accident.

Meanwhile, a 51-year-old man has died after being struck by a truck in Adelaide at Salisbury Highway.

Witnesses have been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
