Maintenance to cause delays on Riverside Expressway

Traffic diversions will be imposed on motorists using Brisbane's Riverside Expressway this weekend

July 12, 2012

Motorists are being told to expect delays this weekend on Brisbane’s Riverside Expressway due to a scheduled maintenance of the motorway.

Queensland Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson says one southbound span near the Margaret Street off-ramp will be lifted using hydraulic jacks as part of a trial run for a major maintenance program.

The lift will take place from 10.30pm on July 13 until 4pm on July 14. A section will be closed with traffic diverted off at Elizabeth Street, along William Street and returning to the motorway at Alice Street.

“If successful, the process will be completed the following weekend when a set of pot bearings located under the deck will be replaced by new 60kg stainless steel pot bearings,” Emerson says.

“A pot bearing plays a crucial role, supporting the weight of the bridge deck and allowing movement in response to changing temperatures and different loads.”

Emerson says pot bearings identified during an inspection nine years ago will be examined.

“Depending on the results, hundreds of pot bearings may need to be replaced on up to 28 spans in stages over about two years.
