New South Wales authorities are searching for 63 trucks owned by seven companies and some owner-drivers following this month’s installment of the state’s trucking safety crackdown.

The NSW Police Force Traffic and Highway Patrol Command (THPC) and Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) have formed Operation Explorer to tackle speeding and speed limiter breaches.

Once found, the sought trucks will be escorted to RMS heavy vehicle checking stations and inspected for mechanical, speed-limiter and log book safety breaches, police say.

"This is the fourth major joint operation this year, and each time, we find heavy vehicles breaching safety regulations," THPC Operations Commander Superintendent Stuart Smith says.

"Our state relies on an efficient trucking transport industry, but their productivity cannot depend on speed limiter tampering and cutting corners on safety compliance.

"The joint RMS and THPC heavy vehicle task force acknowledges the great number of companies who have heeded our warnings and continue to operate safely and within regulations, but there are still rogue operators that need to be prosecuted."

The operation began at 6pm yesterday and will run until midnight tomorrow.

"We have had solid results overnight, where officers brought in 59 heavy vehicles for inspection, including four of our target heavy vehicles," Smith says.

"Officers and inspectors issued 42 compliance notices for various offences and defects, including three for failing to enter the checking station."

One heavy vehicle was issued a major defect notice for a speed limiter set to 140km/h.
